Culture, History & Rum Tours in Curaçao
Curaçao's history is close at hand: on Willemstad's waterfront, in the plantation houses of the countryside and in a glass of local rum. Taste AnnaBay rum at the Rumlocker in Punda, or explore the historic house museum of Mongui Maduro at Landhuis Rooi Catootje at your own pace. Below we compare both and point you to other tours and walks with history along the way.
Culture, history & rum we offer
- The Rumlocker Experience · Punda, Willemstad · USD 25 per person
There's more to Curaçao than beaches. Its capital's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its countryside is dotted with old plantation houses, and the island gave its name to a liqueur known around the world. An hour of history or tasting fits easily between beach days, and it changes how you see the rest of the island.
What culture and history look like in Curaçao
Willemstad grew up as a Dutch trading port in the 17th century, and it still looks the part. St. Anna Bay divides the city into Punda and Otrobanda, linked by the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pedestrian bridge first built in 1888 and known as the "Swinging Old Lady" because it swings aside to let ships pass. Along the water, the colored facades of the Handelskade are the island's best-known view. In Punda you'll also find the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, a reminder of the Sephardic Jewish community that helped shape the island's trade.
Out in the countryside stand the landhuizen, the plantation houses of the colonial era. Their history is also the history of slavery: in 1795, Tula led an uprising that began on the Kenepa plantation in the west, an event Curaçao still remembers. Some plantation houses are now museums, restaurants or, in the case of Landhuis Chobolobo, the home of Curaçao liqueur.
Older still is the ancient rock art in caves such as Kueba di Indjan, which you can see on some of our off-road Jeep tours.
The Rumlocker Experience (AnnaBay Club)
At the Rumlocker on St. Anna Bay in Punda, AnnaBay Club tells the story of its rum and shows how it's made, from distillation to aging in oak, up close. Then you taste the White, the Amber, the Aged 5 Years and a flavored rum, plus rum poured straight from the barrel.
The tour runs Monday to Friday at 3 pm and lasts 45 minutes to an hour, with up to 12 guests per tour. You must be 18 or older to taste. The Rumlocker is at Plaza Jojo Correa 1–5 in Punda, a 3-minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge, so it's easy to reach on foot if you're already in town.
Staying at a hotel? Free pickup is available from participating hotels, arranged in advance, between 2 and 2:30 pm depending on the distance and the number of guests. The list covers hotels in the Piscadera area and the Mambo and Jan Thiel area, and AnnaBay can organize the ride back at their regular fixed price.
The Rumlocker Experience suits anyone curious about how rum is made, groups of friends, and couples looking for an easy late-afternoon plan in town.
Self-guided tour at the Mongui Maduro Museum
The Historic House Museum Mongui Maduro is at Landhuis Rooi Catootje, a plantation house on Schottegatweg Oost in greater Willemstad. On the self-guided tour you explore the house museum at your own pace, for about an hour. You pick a time and book instantly, then pay at the museum.
It's a quiet counterpoint to the busy waterfront: a chance to step inside one of the island's landhuizen and take your time, without a group around you. Book a self-guided visit to the Mongui Maduro Museum if you'd rather explore at your own speed than follow a guide.
The two compared
- Format: a guided story and tasting at the Rumlocker; a self-guided visit at the museum.
- When: Monday to Friday at 3 pm for the rum; the time you choose for the museum.
- Length: 45 minutes to an hour; about 60 minutes.

- Getting there: walk in Punda or take the free pickup from participating hotels; the museum is outside the old center, at Landhuis Rooi Catootje.
- Booking: a request that AnnaBay Club confirms; an instant booking for a time slot, paid at the museum.
More history on other tours and walks
Several other trips on Kua Kaminda bring history into the day:
- The Curaçao Complete Island Tour includes Willemstad, a stop at the liqueur factory, the island's land houses and Shete Boka National Park. Its photos show Landhuis Chobolobo and the monument to the 1795 slave revolt in front of Landhuis Knip.
- The National Park Jeep Safari includes plantation history on its way into Christoffel National Park, where Landhuis Savonet stands at the entrance.
- Our free, self-guided walk for a cruise stop in Otrobanda and Punda starts at Rif Fort, built in 1828 to defend Otrobanda and the harbor entrance, crosses the Queen Emma Bridge, passes the Penha building from the early 18th century and ends at Punda's floating market.
- In Banda Abou and Westpunt, the Kenepa area is tied to Tula's uprising, and at Playa Forti a restaurant opened in 1958 on the ruins of a British fort from the Napoleonic era.
Planning a culture day in Willemstad
A good weekday plan: walk from Otrobanda to Punda in the morning, have lunch in town, and finish with the 3 pm rum tasting at the Rumlocker, a few minutes from the bridge. The cruise-stop walk takes around three hours with photo stops. Allow extra time for bridge openings, when the Queen Emma Bridge swings aside and you wait or take the free ferry. If you're arriving by ship, check your all-aboard time before setting off.
The Mongui Maduro Museum is away from the waterfront, so plan on a car or taxi to get there. Our Willemstad area guide covers Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai and the rest of the city.
Practical tips
- The Rumlocker runs on weekdays only; there are no tours on Saturday or Sunday.

- For the walk, wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection. The upper viewpoint at Rif Fort involves stairs.
- Cancel the rum tour more than 24 hours ahead for a refund; later cancellations are charged.
