Christoffel National Park and the north coast

Christoffel National Park, in the northwest of Curaçao, is the island's largest national park. It is home to Mount Christoffel (Christoffelberg), the highest point on the island, and it was formed from old plantations. Landhuis Savonet, the plantation house at the park entrance, is one of them. The hills are covered in dry forest, cactus and scrub, and the park is the main refuge of the Curaçao white-tailed deer, a small and shy island subspecies.

On this safari the open 4×4s drive into the park itself, including the Orchid Route, which only Yellow Adventures is allowed to drive. The landscape is red rock and green hills, and the viewing points high on the hills look out over the park to the sea; one of the tour photos was taken from Seru Bientu.

The safari also takes you to the rough north shore, Curaçao's windward coast, where the trade winds push the waves hard against the rocks and blowholes spout through the limestone. Photos from the tour show the boulders and clear pools at Boka Patrick, a blowhole in action, and the Land Cruisers parked on the north shore.

Other photos from the day show flamingos wading in a salt pan and Landhuis Ascension on its hill above Ascension bay. Plantation houses (landhuizen) like these are reminders of the plantation era, when the land was worked by enslaved Africans, and plantation history is one of the things your driver-guide covers.
