The west coast and the Blue Room

The day starts on land, off-road along Curaçao's rugged west coast. The tracks are red dirt between cactus and cliffs, and the photos show guests standing up in the open Jeep on a red-dirt plain by the sea, a railing looking out over Bullenbaai, limestone cliffs above clear turquoise water, and a small sandy cove tucked between the rocks.

In the afternoon you switch to a boat for about two hours. The Blue Room is a sea cave in the limestone cliffs of the west coast. Daylight enters through the water at the mouth of the cave, so the water inside glows a bright blue. The boat goes out in the afternoon, when the light makes the water glow.

The boat trip also stops at two calm snorkel spots. The west coast is the sheltered side of the island, out of the trade winds that pound the north shore, so the water here is usually calm and clear. The photos show snorkelers in a blue cove below a cliff, a swim alongside a sea turtle, and the bay and the hills of the west seen from the water.

Because the morning is spent on dry, rocky ground and the afternoon in the water, the day gives you both sides of the coast: the cactus country above the cliffs and the clear water below them.
