The Rumlocker in Punda

The Rumlocker is AnnaBay Club's home on St. Anna Bay, at Plaza Jojo Correa 1–5 in Punda, a three-minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge. Punda is the oldest quarter of Willemstad, on the east side of the harbor entrance. Together with Otrobanda across the water, it is part of the historic city that UNESCO lists as a World Heritage Site.

The Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pontoon bridge for pedestrians that swings open to let ships into the harbor. Along the Punda waterfront, the colored merchant houses of the Handelskade face the bay, and nearby are Fort Amsterdam and the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas.

Inside the Rumlocker, the tour follows the rum itself. First comes the story of AnnaBay rum, then a close look at how it is made, from distillation to aging in oak. It ends with a tasting of the White, the Amber, the Aged 5 Years and a flavored rum, plus rum poured straight from the barrel. Aging is where much of a rum's color and flavor comes from: the spirit draws them out of the oak, and in a warm climate like Curaçao's that exchange happens faster than in cooler countries.

The tour starts at 3 pm on weekdays, so it fits well after a day of walking around town: Punda's shopping streets, cafés and waterfront are all within a few minutes on foot, and Otrobanda is just across the bridge. If you come by hotel pickup instead, AnnaBay collects guests from a list of participating hotels in the Piscadera, Mambo and Jan Thiel areas.
