Banda Abou and the north coast

The full day begins like the half day, in the dry back country of Banda Abou: red-dirt tracks between cactus fields, wind turbines turning above the sea, and the mondi, the local name for the wild bush. On the way there is a cave you can swim in, one of the island's biggest caves to explore, and a natural pool the guides keep secret.

The photos show Kueba di Indjan, a limestone cave with stalactites, columns, a sandy floor, green mineral walls and ancient rock art. Out in the open, you may meet the wild cows that graze near the coast, crabs on the rocks and melon cacti growing in the bush.

The extra hours take you further along the rugged north coast. This is Curaçao's windward side, where the trade winds drive the waves straight onto the limestone shelf, so the coast looks nothing like the calm beaches of the west. Here the tour reaches a blowhole stronger than the ones at Shete Boka National Park, and tide pools in the limestone that you can swim in.

The tide pools are full of small sea life: the photos show the guide and guests peering into a pool, an octopus gliding through shallow water, and the guide walking the coast at Houtjes Bay, with the Jeep parked on the rocky shore at the water's edge.
