Caracasbaai and the Tugboat
Caracasbaai, also called Caracas Bay, is a bay on Curaçao's south coast, east of Willemstad and close to Jan Thiel and Spanish Water. The tour starts at Fort Beekenburg, the stone fort on the shore of the bay, built in the early 1700s to guard it against attack.
From the clear shallows below the fort you head out over the reef on your own underwater sea scooter, a small battery-powered propeller that pulls you through the water while you hold on and steer. The south coast is the calm side of the island, and the reef here starts close to shore. The photos show coral heads with angelfish and huge schools of striped sergeant majors swirling around snorkelers.
The goal is the Tugboat, a small tugboat that sank in shallow water in Caracasbaai and is now covered in coral and full of fish. It is one of the best-known snorkel and dive sites on the island, partly because it lies close enough to the surface to be seen clearly from above. Once you are there, you can stop and let the fish come to you.
Your guide takes underwater photos and videos of your ride along the way, free of charge, so you go home with pictures of yourself gliding over the wreck.
