A relaxed round of the salt pans of Jan Thiel with Ingrid: rugged nature, quiet salt lakes and a good chance of seeing wild flamingos up close. With luck the water glows pink. About three hours, close to Jan Thiel and yet a world away.

The salt pans can be dry or full of water at different times of year, which changes their colour and the chance of flamingos.

A group hike with Ingrid: at most 12 people, so everyone can hear her and she can keep an eye on everyone.

An easy pace of about 3 km an hour, with stops to talk, rest and take photos.

Ingrid first confirms that there is room on your date.

Then you pay USD 10 a person online to book.

On the day you pay Ingrid her own price: USD 20 or EUR 15 a person.

No other booking fees.

Cancellation and weather

Cancel more than 24 hours before the hike and your USD 10 a person is refunded in full.

Cancel within 24 hours, or do not show up, and it is not refunded.

If Ingrid cancels, for example for the weather, you choose another date or get your USD 10 back.

You pay Ingrid only on the day, so there is nothing else to refund.

Will we see flamingos?

There is a good chance: wild flamingos often feed on the salt pans of Jan Thiel. They are wild, so never guaranteed, and how many there are depends on the water.

How do I book and pay?

Send your date and the number of hikers with the request form. Kua Kaminda passes your request to Ingrid; once she confirms there is room, you pay USD 10 a person online to book, and Ingrid’s own price, USD 20 or EUR 15 a person, to her on the day.

Can we have a private hike?

Yes. Ingrid also walks with just your group, alone, with your partner, family or friends, and fits the route, the pace and the time of day to your wishes. For four people it is typically about EUR 100, paid to her on the day, plus USD 10 a person to book. Transport and a lunch can be added: ask in your request.

What should I bring?

Sunscreen, at least a full litre of water, a camera, a cap and sunglasses, and shoes with good grip, no flip-flops. Long trousers if you would rather not get scratched.
