Fishing off the west coast

The charter leaves from Playa Santa Cruz, a beach in Banda Abou on Curaçao's west coast. This side of the island lies in the lee of the trade winds, which blow in from the east, so the water off the beach is usually calmer than on the north coast. When the weather calls for it, Reef Riders can use another departure point instead.

What makes fishing here special is how quickly the sea gets deep. Curaçao rises steeply from the seabed, so a short ride from the beach puts you over water hundreds of meters deep. That is where you fish on the bottom for Caribbean red snapper, with powerful electric reels that haul the heavy line up for you, so it is easy even if you have never fished.

The boat is a private 22-foot boat with a shade roof, run by a local captain. On the bow is a Minn Kota trolling motor with Spot-Lock, a system that uses GPS to hold the boat over one spot without dropping anchor.

Back on shore, the captain cleans your catch at the fish-cleaning table by the water, and it is yours to keep. The photos show guests with bright red snappers and one with a big amberjack, and rows of snappers laid out on the table after a trip.
